For nearly fifty years, USCRI compiled the Country Updates, Statistical Tables, and articles of the World Refugee Survey through a rigorous method including, when possible, site visits to the countries on which we report.  In most countries, we had Research Partners—local human rights NGOs that interview officials, refugees, and representatives of local civil society and international agencies based on a standard questionnaire, draw upon their own experience and expertise.  We also sought input from governmental representatives, human rights commissions, field offices of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and the U.N. Relief and Works Administration for Palestine Refugees in the Near East.  We crosschecked all of this with secondary sources in the media, on the internet, and in human rights reports.

Information presented in the World Refugee Survey is analyzed in a five-part format distilled from the rights of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and evaluates each country's performance on: (1) Refoulement and Physical Protection; (2) Detention and Access to Courts; (3) Freedom of Movement and Residence; (4) Right to Earn a Livelihood; and, (5) Public Relief and Education.
